Hey, Southern Oaks residents, did you know that November is National Peanut Butter Lovers Month, a timeOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA to celebrate our favorite food! Americans will celebrate by eating more than 65 million pounds of peanut butter during the month of November.

Did you know Southern Peanut Growers started the celebration as Peanut Butter Lovers Day on November 4, 1990. November 4 marks the anniversary of the first patent for peanut butter, applied for by Dr. John Harvey Kellogg on November 4, 1895. In 1995, it grew to a month-long celebration, when peanut butter celebrated its 100th birthday!

  • It takes about 540 peanuts to make a 12-ounce jar of peanut butter.
  • There are enough peanuts in one acre to make 30,000 peanut butter sandwiches.
  • Americans spend almost $800 million a year on peanut butter.
  • Peanuts are the #1 snack nut consumed in the U.S., accounting for two-thirds of the snack nut market.

Peanuts Made Famous

  • Peanut butter was the secret behind “Mr. Ed,” TV’s talking horse. Spreading peanut butter inside the horse’s mouth created a natural talking movement every time the animal moved his sticky jaws.
  • There are six cities in the U.S. named Peanut: Peanut, California; Lower Peanut, Pennsylvania; Upper Peanut, Pennsylvania; Peanut, Pennsylvania, Peanut, Tennessee; and Peanut West Virginia.
