For our residents here at Southern Oaks Apartments who don’t want to join a gym to get into shape this year, try the following tips to incorporate exercise into your daily routine.

  1. Improve your posture when you  are looking in the mirror each morning.  Retract your shoulders, put your chin up and fire up your core muscles by contracting you abdominals.  You can exercise AND work on your posture.
  2. Use phone calls to trigger you to stand up and get moving.  This will help you to meet the 30 minutes of moderate physical activity suggested by the CDC and the American College of Sports Medicine.
  3. Stand like a stork.  When standing in one place, such as chopping vegetable or washing dishes, stand on one leg.  This helps to reinforce neuromuscular control around your ankle, knee and hip which increases functional fitness.
  4. Squat while doing simple activities.  Practice your squats while brushing your teeth, talking on the phone or watching TV.
  5. Give your home a power cleaning.   Since you have to clean anyway, why not turn it into and aerobic workout.  Practice your lunges while vacuuming and dusting.

Using the above tips this winter, you’ll be in shape for all those wonderful outdoor activities when spring arrives this year.
