It just seems like yesterday when the Southern Oaks children got out of school for the summer and now it’s time ID-10048210to start planning for that first day of the school year.  In Dekalb County, schools start August 10th, 2015.  In order to start the school year off on the right foot, here are some simple organizational steps you can take to help everyone enjoy a smoother and more successful start to the new school year.

  • Specify a time and place to do homework.  Whether your child likes to complete their homework right after school or needs time to play and unwind before starting, maintain the same schedule for each child as much as possible.
  • Keep clutter to a minimum.  Make sure the space designated for homework has the necessary tools nearby, such as pencils, erasers, scissors and glue sticks.  Keep these items in a container available for the child.  Make sure these supplies are returned to the designated container when homework is finished.
  • Keep backpacks and lunch boxes in a specific place.  Make sure to inspect backpacks together with your child at the same time each day.  This will allow you to make sure that your child always has the necessary supplies needed during school and will help your child to remember to pull out any homework or project assignments.
  • Put completed homework and/or needed supplies into the backpack.  Your child will have the supplies they need and will get the credit they deserve for work well done!

Starting off the school year on the right foot for both you and your children will help prevent so me of the chaos that comes with a new school year.
