  1. You may or may not know why it’s called Stone Mountain. We’re named for the largest hunk of bare rock in the U.S. It also happens to be home to some forms of plant and animal life that are found nowhere else in the world.
  2. Stone Mountain is home to the oldest structure that was burned during General Sherman’s march on Atlanta that is still in use today. The old train depot that was built in 1856 has been home to Stone Mountain’s railroad station, City Hall, and Police Departments.
  3. The mountain has been a tourist destination for over a century. People would come by railway to Stone Mountain, hike up to the mountaintop where they would dine at a restaurant there and take in the sweeping view.
  4. Stone Mountain used to be called New Gibraltar. The name was officially changed in 1847.
  5. The entire town was destroyed by General John McPherson’s troops during the Civil War.
